You can easily adjust the volume by rotating the Jog Dial. You will hear a beep when the volume reaches maximum or minimum level. The volume is set and maintained independently at different levels for each audio source even when you turn off and on the headset. For example, once you set the volume for mobile phone handsfree, it will not change even if you adjust the volume for your Bluetooth MP3 music. So you can always maintain the preferred optimum volume level for each audio source.

Note:

Use of the product at a high volume for a long period of time may damage your eardrums or hearing ability. Keep the volume at a modest level to prevent damage.

You can charge the 20S by connecting the supplied USB power & data cable into a computer USB port or USB wall charger. You can use any standard micro-USB cable to charge the 20S . The LED turns red while the headset is charging and turns blue when it is fully charged. It takes about 2.5 hours to be completely charged.

Note:
Any 3rd party USB charger can be used with Sena products if the charger is approved by either the FCC, CE, IC or other locally approved agencies that Sena accepts.

Please make sure to take off your 20S -installed helmet while charging. The headset automatically turns off during charging.

Here is a video we made with a quick tip on how to remove the main unit of the 20S from the clamp kit easily.

1. Turn on the 20S and press the Phone Button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes red and blue alternately and you hear multiple beeps. You will hear a voice prompt saying “Phone pairing”.

2. Search for Bluetooth devices on your mobile phone. Select the 20S in the list of the devices detected on the mobile phone.

3. Enter 0000 for the PIN. Some mobile phones may not ask for the PIN.

4. The mobile phone confirms that pairing has completed and the 20S is ready to use. You will hear a voice prompt from the 20S saying “Your headset is paired”.

5. If the pairing process is not completed within three minutes, the 20S will return to stand-by mode.

This video explains GPS pairing allowing you to hear directions from your navigation device will having an intercom conversation.

The 20S supports an intercom conference of up to 8 people so that you can all be talking in a group over the intercom at the same time. In order for 8 people to talk in an eight-way intercom conference, all of the 20S headsets needs to be paired and connected together in "chain" so that all of the headsets are "linked" to each other.

Here is the easiest way on how to pair and connect eight 20S headsets together for an eight-way intercom conference.

1. Place headset A and headset B into Intercom Pairing Mode.

2. Hold down the Jog Dial on one of the headsets for 6 seconds until you hear the voice prompt say "Intercom pairing". The can be done on both headsets at the same time too.

3. When both headsets are in Intercom Pairing Mode and the LEDs are flashing red rapidly on both headsets, tap the Jog Dial once on either headset.

4. Wait for them to pair together. The LEDs on both headsets will flash blue twice at the same time.

5. Pair headset B to headset C using Steps 2-4.

6. Pair headset C to headset D using Steps 2-4.

7. Pair headset D to headset E using Steps 2-4.

8. Pair headset E to headset F using Steps 2-4.

9. Pair headset F to headset G using Steps 2-4.

10. Pair headset G to headset H using Steps 2-4.

Now that all of the headsets are paired together, here is how to connect all of them for talking over the intercom.

1. After you pair headset G to headset H, they will automatically be connected together so that they can talk over the intercom.

Now each headset needs to join the intercom conversation one by one with the last two paired headsets (G and H) in reverse order to create a "chain" so that everyone can talk to each other over the intercom. The "chain" can be created starting with headset F and going in reverse order until you have headset A join the intercom conversation.

2. Tap the Jog Dial once on headset F to join the conversation.

3. Tap the Jog Dial once on headset E to join the conversation.

4. Tap the Jog Dial once on headset D to join the conversation.

5. Tap the Jog Dial once on headset C to join the conversation.

6. Tap the Jog Dial once on headset B to join the conversation.

7. Tap the Jog Dial once on headset A to join the conversation and have all 8 headsets connected together for talking over the intercom.

When using the intercom on the 20S, the following is recommended:

  • Ride with the antenna flipped up.
  • Ride in the order that the headsets are paired in (A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H). If you are headset A then you are the the first person of the group. If you are headset H then you are at the last person in the group.
  • Keep that order while riding for the best intercom experience with the 20S.
  • The same steps can be used if you are riding in a group between 3 - 8 people.
  • If you are riding with 5 or more people then enable the Eight-Way Intercom setting for each person through the Configuration Menu on the headset or through the Sena Smartphone App.
  • If you are riding with less than 4 people then disable Eight-Way Intercom setting.

The 20S supports the Universal Intercom feature found in other Sena headsets. To pair the 20S to a non-Sena headset you will need to do the following steps:

1. On the 20S, enter the Configuration Menu by holding down the Jog Dial for 12 seconds until you hear the voice prompt say "Configuration". You can also activate the voice command system and give the voice command "Configuration".

2. Rotate the Jog Dial clockwise or counter-clockwise until you hear the voice prompt "Universal Intercom".

3. Tap the Phone Button to place the 20S into Intercom Pairing mode.

4. On the non-Sena headset, perform the necessary actions to place the headset into Mobile Phone Pairing mode.

5. Wait for the devices to pair together.

You can initiate the Universal Intercom connection with non-Sena Bluetooth headsets using the same intercom connection method as you would between other Sena headsets. Make sure that the antenna is flipped up and you may single tap the Jog Dial to begin an intercom conversation with the first intercom friend, double tap with the second intercom friend, and triple tap with the third intercom friend.

Non-Sena Bluetooth headsets may initiate the Universal Intercom connection by activating the voice dialier or using the redialing operation. You may also disconnect the existing connection by ending a call operation function (refer to the user’s manual of the headsets for voice dialing, redialing, and ending a call).

The 20S is capable of having a multi-way intercom conference between 8 20S headsets. In order for all 8 headsets to communicate with each other, all of the headsets need to be set up as a chain for all of them to talk in a multi-way intercom conference. For all of the 20S headsets to talk in a multi-way intercom conference, they need to be paired together.

Here is how to pair the 20S to multiple 20S headsets in a chain for a multi-way intercom conference.

1. Hold down the Jog Dial on 20S #1 for 6 seconds until the LED begins flashing red rapidly and you hear the voice prompt “intercom pairing”.

2. Hold down the Jog Dial on 20S #2 for 6 seconds until the LED begins flashing red rapidly and you hear the voice prompt “intercom pairing”.

3. Once both of the 20S headsets are in Intercom Pairing mode, tap the Jog Dial once on either headset.

4. Wait for the headsets to pair together.

5. Tap the Jog Dial on 20S #2 headset to disconnect them.

6. Repeat the same process to pair 20S #2 to 20S #3, 20S #3 to 20S #4, 20S #4 to 20S# 5, etc. until you pair 20S #7 to 20S #8. You do not need to tap the Jog Dial on either 20S #7 or 20S #8 to disconnect them.

7. Leave 20S #7 and 20S #8 connected together so that they are communicating between each other through the intercom.

To connect all of the headsets together, an intercom conversation needs to be started by one of the headsets. In this case, the intercom conversation will be started after pairing 20S #7 and 20S #8 together. Then each subsequent headset will join the intercom conversation.

Here is how to connect all 8 of the 20S headsets together.

1. While 20S #7 and 20S #8 are communicating with each other, tap the Jog Dial once on 20S #6 for that headset to join the current intercom conversation.

2. While those three headsets are communicating with each other, tap the Jog Dial once on 20S #5 for that headset to join the current intercom conversation.

3. Tap the Jog Dial once on each of the remaining headsets from 20S #4 to 20S #2 until you tap the Jog Dial once on 20S #1. Now all 20S headsets are in a multi-way intercom conference.

This is an easy way of pairing all of the devices together from 1 to 8 then connecting them together in reverse order from 8 to 1 so that each of the headsets will join the on-going intercom conversation.

There is also another way of connecting all 8 of the headsets together after pairing each of them together. Here is how to pair all of the headsets together using an alternate way.

1. After pairing 20S #7 to 20S #8, tap the Jog Dial once to disconnect those two headsets. Now all of the headsets should be in standby mode.

2. Tap the Jog Dial once on 20S #1 to connect to 20S #2.

3. Tap the Jog Dial on once 20S #2 to connect to 20S #3 then tap the Jog Dial once on 20S #3 to connect to #4 and so on and so forth until you tap the Jog Dial once on 20S #7 which will connect to 20S #8 and make it so that all 8 headsets are in a multi-way intercom conference.

If you get a voice prompt that says “intercom failed” when tapping the Jog Dial, tap the Jog Dial again so that it connects to the headset.

You can have an intercom conversation with non-Sena Bluetooth headsets using the Universal Intercom function. Non-Sena Bluetooth headsets can be connected to the Sena Bluetooth headset if they support the Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile (HFP). The working distance may differ depending on the performance of Bluetooth headset that it is connected to. In general, it is shorter than normal intercom distance since it uses the Bluetooth handsfree profile.

The 20S can be paired with non-Sena Bluetooth headsets for Bluetooth intercom conversation. You can pair the 20S with only one non-Sena Bluetooth headset so if you pair with a different non-Sena Bluetooth headset, the previous pairing list will be removed.

1. Turn on the 20S and a non-Sena Bluetooth headset that you want to pair with.

2. Press the Jog Dial for 12 seconds to enter the configuration menu. Rotate the Jog Dial until you hear a voice prompt saying “Universal intercom pairing”. Press the Phone Button to enter into Universal Intercom Pairing mode and the blue LED will flash rapidly and you will hear multiple beeps.

3. Perform the operation required for handsfree pairing on the non-Sena Bluetooth headset (refer to the user’s manual of the headsets you want to use). The 20S will automatically perform pairing with non-Sena Bluetooth headsets in pairing mode.

22. The headset that the intercom group was saved to, the creator, needs to be the one to use any of the 3 connection methods to connect all of the headsets together for a group intercom.

23. The headsets will be connected together in the order that they are listed on the Smartphone App. For the best performance, it is recommended to ride in this ordered number. The amount of time that it takes for the whole group to be connected together depends on the number of headsets in the group. The more headsets in the group, the longer it takes to connect all of the headsets together.

24. When all of the headsets are connected together for a group intercom then you will hear the voice prompt say “group intercom connected”.

Disconnecting

24. To disconnect the group intercom, the headset that created and started the group intercom needs to give the voice command “end intercom”. After giving this voice command, all headsets in the group intercom will be disconnected.

25. If one of the members of the group that did not create and start the group intercom wants to remove themselves from the group intercom conversation then they can give the voice command “end intercom” which will then terminate their own individual connection to the group. By removing themselves from the group, this will cause the one intercom group to split up into two separate intercom groups and all of the remaining headsets will hear the voice prompt will say “group intercom disconnected”.

*Note: They will still be saved as a member of the group intercom on the creator’s 20S and on the list of members in the Smartphone App. When they want to return to the group, then their headset will be reconnected the next time the creator starts the group intercom.

26. If the remaining members of the group want to return to communicating with each other, then the creator of the group needs give the voice command “end intercom” and hear the voice prompt say “group intercom terminated” to end the group intercom with the headsets that it is currently connected to. Then “The Creator” will need to use one of the 3 methods mentioned previously to reconnect the remaining members for a group intercom.

28. When reconnecting all of the current members of the group intercom, the creator’s headset will search for the headset that removed themselves but will stop after a certain amount of time and skip to the next member on the group intercom list.

29. If any of the headsets in the group get disconnected for any reason and the rest of the group intercom hears the voice prompt say “group intercom disconnected” then the creator of the group needs to restart the group intercom by giving the voice command “end intercom” and then use one of the three methods to reconnect everyone back together again.

Video:

This video shows how to activate the Motion Sensor on the 20S.

The 20S EVO operates in the following or der of priority:

Voice command mode (highest)
Ambient mode
Mobile phone
Intercom
Stereo music by audio cable
Music sharing by Bluetooth stereo music
FM Radio
Bluetooth stereo music (lowest)

A lower priority function is always interrupted by a higher priority function. For example, stereo music is interrupted by intercom call, and intercom conversation is interrupted by incoming mobile phone call.

When the 20S EVO is not working properly or is in faulty status for any reason, you may reset by pushing the pin-hole reset button at the back of the headset main unit. Insert a paper clip into the reset pinhole and press the reset button for a second with light pressure. The 20S EVO will be switched off, and you have to turn the system back on and try again. However, this will not restore the headset to factory default settings.

You can set the configuration of the 20S EVO by the voice menu instruction as below.

1. To enter into voice configuration menu, press and hold the Jog Dial for 12 seconds until the LED shows solid blue and you hear high tone double beeps. You will also hear a voice prompt saying “Configuration menu”.

2. Rotate the Jog Dial clockwise or counter-clockwise to navigate between the menus. You will hear voice prompts for each menu item as below.

3. You can enable the feature or execute the command by tapping the Phone Button, or disable the feature by tapping the Jog Dial.

4. If any button is not pressed within 10 seconds, the 20S EVO will exit the configuration and go back to stand-by.

5. If you want to exit the configuration immediately, rotate the Jog Dial until you hear a voice prompt saying “Exit configuration”, and tap the Phone Button.

The voice prompt for each menu item is as below:

You can select proper FM frequency region from the Device Manager. With the region setting, you may optimize seek function to avoid unnecessary frequency range (Factory default: Americas).

How do I perform a Factory Reset on my device?

1. To restore the 20S to factory default settings, press and hold the Phone Button for 12 seconds until the LED shows solid red and you hear double beeps. You will hear a voice prompt saying “Factory reset”.

2. Within 5 seconds, press the Jog Dial to confirm reset. The headset will be restored to factory setting and switched off automatically. You will hear a voice prompt saying “Headset reset, good-bye”.

3. If you press the Phone Button or don’t press the Jog Dial within 5 seconds, the reset attempt is canceled and the headset returns to stand-by mode. You will hear a voice prompt saying “Canceled”.

Motion Sensor Sensitivity determines the sensitivity when you double tap on the surface of the 20S to enter voice command mode. Here is how to adjust the sensitivity level of the Motion Sensor.

1. Enter the Configuration Menu by holding down the Jog Dial for 12 seconds until the voice prompt says "Configuration menu". You can also enter the voice command system and give the voice command "Configuration".

2. Rotate the Jog Dial until you hear the voice prompt, “Motion sensor sensitivity”.

3. Tap the Phone Button once. This will lead you to level adjustment mode. Default is at low, but you may change it to high, or disable the feature by rotating the Jog Dial.

4. After you have completed the setting, tap the Phone Button to select which sensitivity level you desire.

If this feature does not work properly, then you can select Disable when cycling through the different sensitivity levels. Once disabled, you will need to use the "Hello Sena" voice command or tap the Ambient Mode Button once to activate the voice command system.

Smart Volume Control automatically changes the level of the speaker volume based on the level of the environmental noise. When it is disabled, volume is controlled manually. You can enable Smart Volume Control and choose which level you want through the Sena Smartphone App or you can adjust the level through the Configuration Menu. When in the Configuration Menu, rotate the Jog Dial until you hear the voice prompt, “Smart volume control”. By tapping the Phone Button, it will lead you to the level adjustment mode. You can enable it by setting the sensitivity to low, medium, or high. Smart Volume Control responds to smaller environmental noises as the sensitivity level becomes higher.

Yes. You can hear GPS directions on the 20S and talk over the intercom at the same time. Here are the 3 various ways you can listen to GPS directions and talk over the intercom on the 20S.

1. Audio Multitasking - You can hear the directions from a GPS app on your smartphone while talking over the intercom. With the Audio Multitasking feature on the 20S, the audio from the GPS will be reduced in the background while you are communicating over the intercom.

2. Navigation App Support - You can enable Navigation App Support on the 20S through the Configuration Menu or on the Sena Smartphone App so that the audio from the GPS will not be reduced in the background while talking over the intercom.

3. GPS Pairing - If you are using a standalone GPS device such as the Zumo 660, then you can pair the 20S to the GPS using GPS Pairing. GPS Pairing will allow you to hear the GPS directions and talk over the intercom at the same time. If you use a pairing method other than GPS Pairing then the intercom will be interrupted when the GPS gives a navigational direction due to the GPS direction having a higher priority than the intercom.

To use GPS pairing on the 20S, follow these steps:

1. On the 20S, hold down the Jog Dial for 6 seconds until you hear the voice prompt "Intercom Pairing" and you see the LED flash red rapidly.

2. Tap the Phone Button once and you will hear the voice prompt say "Second Mobile Phone Pairing" and the LED will change to flashing blue rapidly.

3. Tap the Phone Button once more and you will hear the voice prompt say "GPS Pairing" and the LED will change to flashing green rapidly.

4. On your GPS device, search for the 20S in the Bluetooth menu.

5. Select the Sena 20S once it is available in the Bluetooth menu on the GPS.

6. Wait for the devices to pair together.

Users can change the language for Sena Bluetooth Device Manager by pressing the flag icon at the top-right corner of the manager or by selecting the [Manager Software Language] menu at the [Context Menu]. If it is the first time to run the Sena Bluetooth Device Manager after updating it, users are prompted to select the manager software language.

How do I install my 20S on a Schuberth  C3 Helmet?

Here is how to attach the Glued Surface Mounting Adapter to the 20S. The Glued Surface Mounting Adapter is an alternative way to attach the 20S to the side of a motorcycle helmet.

1. Remove the main unit of the 20S from the clamp kit.

2. Remove the hex screws on the back plate of the clamp kit using the included Allen Wrench.

3. Remove the screw holding the speakers of the clamp kit using a Philips head screwdriver.

4. Remove the speaker connector from the speaker port on the back plate of the clamp kit.

5. Remove the back plate from the clamp kit.

6. Remove the thick piece of rubber padding from the clamp kit. Removing the thick rubber padding will make installation of the 20S easier.

You can replace the thick rubber padding with one of the two thinner pieces of rubber padding if so desired.

7. Hook the top piece of the Glued Surface Mounting adapter onto the clamp kit.

8. Place the Glued Surface Mounting Adapter on top of the back of the clamp kit and line it up in the proper position.

9. Re-attach the hex screws to tighten the Glued Surface Mounting Adapter to the clamp kit using the included Allen Wrench.

10. Re-attach the screw for the speakers to the clamp kit using a Philips head screwdriver.

Peel off the white cover of the tape on the Glued Surface Mounting Adapter when you are ready to attach the 20S to the side of the motorcycle helmet.

Attaching the 20S to a Schuberth C3/C3 Pro or BMW System 6 helmet using the standard clamp kit may be difficult because of the thickness of the outer shell. The thickness of the outer shell causes the headset to not sit firmly against the side of the helmet (as pictured below). An alternative option is to use the Glued Surface Mounting Adapter so that the headset will sit flush against the helmet.

Note:
Sena recommends the clamp unit over the glued surface mounting adapter. Even though the glued surface mounting adapter is provided for convenience, Sena does not assume any responsibility for use of it. Users may have to use the glued adapter at their own risk and responsibility.

If the Glued Surface Mounting Adapter is not your preferred way for attaching the 20S to the helmet, then then there is another possible option.

The 20S comes packaged with 2 rubber pads for altering how the headset sits against the outside of the helmet. You can swap out the thick rubber pad on the clamp kit with one of the two thinner pads or you can make the thick rubber pad even thicker by attaching the other pads to it.

However, for using the clamp kit on a Schuberth C3/C3 Pro or BMW System 6 helmet then you would need to attach the thinner rubber pads to the rubber pad that is on the back plate of the clamp kit (as pictured below).

Carefully insert the back plate and the rubber pads inside of the helmet behind the outer shell. Inserting the back plate where the biggest gap behind the outer shell is will make the installation easier (as pictured below). Removing the Allen wrench screws from the clamp kit will also make it easier to insert the back plate behind the outer shell.

Slide the back plate as close as possible to the sun visor switch. Reattach the Allen wrench screws and tighten the back plate to the other portion of the clamp kit.

Now the 20S will sit more firmly against the side of the helmet (as pictured below).

Here are the steps to install the Sena 20S into your motorcycle helmet:

1. Detach the main unit from the clamp kit.

2. If possible it is recommended to remove the cheek pads from your helmet for easier installation.

3. Loosen the screws on the back plate so that you can easily slide the clamp kit onto the helmet.

*Note #1: For off-road helmets you can use the additional rubber pads on the clamp kit to add more space between the helmet and the clamp kit so that there are no issues when sliding on the main unit.

4. Position the microphone in front of your mouth. On some versions of the microphone there is an arrow which needs to be facing towards your mouth. On other versions of the microphone there is a fin which needs to be facing away from your mouth.

5. Insert the speakers into the helmet.

6. Reattach the cheek pads.

7. Slide the main unit into the clamp kit until it clicks firmly into place.

To use the antenna on the 20S after the headset has been attached to the helmet, use the thumb on your left hand to push the tip of the antenna towards the helmet to cause it to flip up. This action can also be performed while wearing motorcycle gloves.

Video:

This video show how to install / mount the device on your helmet.

You can check the battery level in two different ways when the headset is powering on.

LED Indicator
When the headset is powering on, the red LED flashes rapidly indicating the battery level.
4 flashes = High, 70~100%
3 flashes = Medium, 30~70%
2 flashes = Low, 0~30%

Voice Prompt Indicator
When you power on the headset, keep pressing the Jog Dial and the Phone Button simultaneously for about 3 seconds until you hear three, high toned beeps. Then you will hear voice prompt indicating the battery
level. However, if you release the buttons as soon as the headset turns on, you will not hear the voice prompt for the battery level indication.

It is not recommended for a customer to replace the battery in any our products. In addition, Sena does not sell individual batteries in our store for our products for a customer to buy. If a battery has become defective and needs replacing then it is recommended to send in the product for a replacement through our RMA warranty service.

While having an intercom conversation, the stereo audio from a music player such as a phone, the FM radio in the 20S, or the directions from a GPS will be reduced so that you can communicate between other headsets which is controlled by the Intercom-Audio Overlay Sensitivity feature.

The Intercom-Audio Overlay Sensitivity feature in the Configuration Menu determines the sensitivity level of the microphone to cause the volume of the non-intercom audio, such as music, to be reduced into the background. The sensitivity level ranges from 1 which is the lowest amount of sensitivity to 10 which is the highest amount. When the sensitivity level is set to 1 then you will need to speak into the microphone loudly because it may be difficult to cause the non-intercom audio to be reduced. When the sensitivity level is set to 10 then you not need to speak loudly into the microphone because it is very easy to reduce the non-intercom audio as it is highly sensitive.

Here is how to set the Intercom-Audio Overlay Sensitivity feature:

1. To set the Intercom-Audio Overlay Sensitivity feature, enter the Configuration Menu by either holding down the Jog Dial for 12 seconds or using the “Configuration” voice command. Rotate the Jog Dial to cycle through the device settings until you hear the voice prompt say “Intercom-Audio Overlay Sensitivity”.

2. Rotate the Jog Dial to cycle through 1 through 10 and Exit.

3. Press the phone button to change and set the “Intercom-Audio Overlay Sensitivity”.

4. To test the sensitivity level, speak into the microphone to hear a single beep. If you do not hear a beep while testing then the sensitivity level needs to be increased.

5. After setting the Intercom-Audio Overlay Sensitivity setting, rotate the Jog Dial till you hear the voice prompt say “Exit” then press the phone button to exit the Configuration Menu.
